The Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps are one of the Italian artistic symbols in the world. The suggestive staircase joins the top, where there is the church of Trinità dei Monti, with the bottom where you find the Barcaccia fountain. This fountain remembers an historic event, the flood of 1558, when the typical river boats, called “Barcacce” joined from the Tiber the point where the fountain is at the moment.
It was first attributed to the famous artist Pietro Bernini, under the commission ofPope Urban VIII but in reality it is a work of his son, Gian Lorenzo.
At the top the Church of Trinità dei Monti, consacred by Sixtus V in 1587, overlooks the square.
Its name is associated to the presence of the Spanish Embassy.
